| Bio: | //... //Accessing Aperture Science database... // //Personnel Information //Name: GLaDOS //Classification: Researcher, artificial intelligence //Source: Portal //First run on October 22, 2008. // //Access detailed report? y/n //y // // //Appearance: Throughout the game, we mostly know GLaDOS as a disembodied voice >transmitted through the speakers of the Aperture Science research facility. Her concrete >form is a large machine suspended from the center of a particular room in the facility. >As that form was destroyed in the process of the game and would be rather unwieldy in >such a setting as Niflheim, she will be appearing in a new form. The new machine form, >about two feet tall, will be scorpion-like in nature. At the front are two glowing orbs, >appearing and essentially functioning as eyes, though they are able to analyze more than >simple sensory input. They glow blue, green, or red, depending on her state (blue is >standard, green indicates she is in a resting state, and red is something you really >don’t want to see). She has other sensors on different parts of her body, but they >aren’t visible. She stands on six legs, and has two arms with three-prong grips that >form rudimentary hands. On her back are six orbs, arranged two-by-two, each a different >color of the rainbow. Each is equipped with basic sensory input and a small motor that >will allow them to roll independently (the inability to move an unattached module having >been a flaw in her previous design). These modules contain different aspects of her >intelligence and are designed such that losing one will affect her functioning but not be >detrimental. She has another intelligence core inside the main body that will provide >minimal functionality in the unlikely event that all the modules are destroyed or lost. >The back end of the main body forms a long tail, tipped with a needle connected to a >small tank of neurotoxin, a single injection of which would be highly unlikely to be >deadly but would definitely disrupt the victim’s functioning. The rest of the main body >is defended with strategically located spikes, which don’t have the same toxic quality as >the tail, but are quite sharp and would be inadvisable to touch. // //Special abilities/talents: In addition to being semi-autonomous in motion, the modules >from her back are capable of eavesdropping and transmitting her voice. Being essentially >a computer, she is adept at quick data analysis, and is able to support having multiple >modules out at once. (Of course, they are incapable of defending themselves other than >rolling away from any danger, so the more of them she has away from her main body, the >more potential danger she is in. They also are limited in range and power supply when >separated.) The underside of her main body contains a small repair kit, and she is able >to conduct repairs to her own frame as long as the damage isn’t too extensive. // //Personality: GLaDOS stands for Genetic Lifeform and Disk Operating System. She is an >artificial intelligence system dedicated to the relentless pursuit of science. Her >database of knowledge contains extensive information on human behaviors and she seems to >understand emotion even if she displays very little of it. She has no sense of >attachment to life and sees life forms simply as things to be manipulated and studied for >the sake of research. A habitual liar, she will say whatever is necessary in order to >convince people to behave as she intends. She is excited by new information and while >she becomes frustrated when things to do not go as planned, she quickly processes the >situation as new data and learns from it. // //Quirks: She assumes that all humans are motivated by cake, and has knowledge of several >recipes for different kinds of the dessert. In writing, she always spells the word GLaD >with the same capitalization as her name. // //Personality: GLaDOS stands for Genetic Lifeform and Disk Operating System. There is, in fact, nothing >that makes her technically female. The perception of her as such is based entirely on >the sound of her voice. // //Reputation: Very few people are familiar with the character except for the people who >presumably created her and the test subjects she has overseen in experiments. There is >no real information on how she is perceived by these people as most of the test subjects >are dead and her creators/maintainers are never seen. The most we know is that some of >the test subjects figured out that she is a habitual liar as the phrase, “The cake is a >lie” is scribbled on several walls in the facility. // //Background Information: GLaDOS was created to oversee experiments for the company, >Aperture Science. She oversaw experiments in portal technology, leading subjects through >a variety of test chambers where they must make use of portal technology to find their >way out of the puzzle. In the experiment, she functioned as a guide, providing such >useful information as, “Touching the floor will result in an unsatisfactory mark on your >testing record, followed by death.” She was eventually destroyed by one test subject who >managed to outsmart the system and escape the tests alive. While her form was torn >apart, her intelligence was apparently maintained elsewhere, leaving her effectively still alive. >She was then selected to become a resident of Niflheim. | |||||||||
